Snow Day!

The Inventor was supposed to start part-time at the local high school day. He really wants to learn to weld and the local high school offers welding classes. He hopes to take that class in the fall, but he needs a couple of pre-requisites first. Unfortunately, the winter storm we experienced over the weekend led to icy roads which led the district to cancel schools.

Frost on the chicken run

What was supposed to be his first day back in public school since the 3rd grade turned out to be a snow day. Good times! But hey, I’m grateful because the country roads to our house are not exactly the epitome of safety right now.

The Frog Pond (as dubbed by The Inventor)

One of the things I love about homeschooling is that when the weather is beautiful, we can choose to take a “Sun Day” and go play. We might head to the park or the zoo or the nature preserve. We’ll power through the cold wintery days when everyone else is having a snow day so that when spring came, we can finish up our school year on time…or maybe even early! And lest you be concerned that my kiddos were ever deprived of outdoor winter fun, we certainly make time for that as well. It’s really the best of both worlds.

Our Yet-To-Be-Named Rooster

Despite The Inventor’s first day of public high school being pushed back, we still powered through this cold wintery day’s assignments. As I sat at the kitchen table learning about Negation, Conjunction & Disjunction and Truth Tables for Determining Truth Values with The Equestrian, I found myself looking out the window thinking about how beautiful the winter landscape was. I bundled up and traipsed through the snow to capture a few snapshots.

The view from the north pasture

When we first saw this property, it was mid-October. The leaves were still mostly green on the trees, though the shrubs were definitely wearing their fall colors. By the time we moved in a month later, most of the scenery was various shades of brown and the trees were mostly naked. The white landscape of this past weekend reminds me of how different it can and will look through the seasons, each with its own majestic beauty.

As I write this, much of the ice is already gone and the snow is melting. The sun’s warmth is doing its thing. I’m sure my chickens are their own version of thankful that free ranging is in their near future again. They are not fond of the snow by any means, but the snow doesn’t seem to be bothering the horses today. I’m not going to let it bother me either.
